NFC on iPhone and Android: where to tap, how to switch it on.
An NFC business card works without an app: just touch it to the right spot on the phone. On iPhone that’s the top of the phone, on Android usually the middle of the back. If a phone can’t read NFC, any camera can scan the QR code on the back of the card.
Touch the card to the top edge, near the camera. Nothing to switch on.

Android: the middle of the back
That’s where the reader is on most phones. NFC needs to be on.

No NFC? The QR code
Any camera can scan the QR code on the back of the card.
Guide
Step by step, phone by phone.
iPhone XS and newer: no app, in the background
1
Where is the NFC reader on iPhone?
On iPhone the NFC reader is at the top of the phone, near the camera. Touch the card to the top edge and hold it there for a second or two.
iPhone XS and newer (iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17) read the card in the background without an app whenever the screen is on. iPhone 7, 8 and X read it with the NFC reader in Control Center (iOS 14 and later), or use the QR code.
2
Do you need to switch NFC on on iPhone?
No. On iPhone NFC is always on; there is no switch for it. The screen just needs to be on, with the Camera or Wallet app closed.
Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi and the rest
1
Where is the NFC reader on Android?
On most Android phones the NFC reader is in the middle of the back or below the camera. A few examples:
Samsung Galaxy: middle of the back
Google Pixel: upper back, below the camera
Xiaomi, Redmi, Poco: upper middle of the back
If nothing happens, slowly move the card across the back: where the phone vibrates or reacts, that’s the reader.
2
How do you switch NFC on on Android?
On Android, NFC has to be switched on. The menu differs a little by phone; usually you find it here:
Samsung: Settings → Connections → NFC and contactless payments
Quicker: pull down the notification shade and look for the NFC tile.
No NFC? There’s the QR code
1
Which phones support NFC?
Almost every smartphone from recent years: every iPhone since iPhone 7, and most Android phones. On older or entry-level phones, the QR code always works.
2
Do you need an app for the card?
No, neither you nor the person you share it with. The profile opens in the browser and can be saved to contacts with one tap.
